Strategic Innovation Fund — Stream 1 ### 📋 Eligible Entities - Canadian corporations (private, public, or Crown-owned) - Eligible partnerships (where at least one partner is a Canadian corporation) - Canadian-controlled private corporations (CCPCs) - Larger firms and established companies (primary target) - Not eligible: Sole proprietors, non-profits, individuals, or foreign-controlled entities ### 💰 Funding Details - Contribution Rate: Up to 50% of eligible expenses - Funding Type: Non-repayable contribution (grant) - Typical Project Scope: $500,000 to $25 million in eligible costs - Cost-sharing: Applicant must fund minimum 50% of project costs through own resources or other sources - No royalty requirements on future commercialization success ### 🛠️ Approved Expenses - R&D personnel salaries and wages (researchers, scientists, technicians) - Materials, equipment, and supplies directly used in R&D - Contracted R&D services (universities, research institutes, consultants) - Technology acquisition and licensing fees - Prototype development and testing - Intellectual property (IP) development and patent costs - Indirect costs (overhead allocation, up to 20% of direct costs) - Not eligible: Land, buildings, general administrative overhead, marketing or sales activities ### ⚠️ Conditions & Milestones - Project Timeline: Typically 2–4 years - Commercialization Focus: Project must demonstrate clear path to market within 5 years post-completion - Reporting Requirements: Progress reports at defined milestones, financial audits, and commercialization updates - Eligible Work: R&D must be conducted primarily in Canada - Technology Transfer Requirement: Explicit focus on moving innovation from lab to commercial application - Due Diligence: Subject to government assessment of project viability and applicant financial health - Clawback Clause: May require repayment if commercialization targets are significantly missed - Intellectual Property: Applicant retains ownership; government may require access to results for policy purposes
